WHAT IS OCD ( OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER )





Scenario: Anna loves to brush her teeth and wash her hands.
Sometimes her gums may even bleed. This type of behavior is
very common in the patient with OCD.


What is OCD?
OCD is an obsessive compulsive disorder. Repetitive behavior 
and actions done in excess, which may possibly cause harm, is
it's hallmark.  OCD may begin in late childhood and requires 
medical intervention.

                                                                      Treatment of OCD
               Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of Psychotherapy
                 which is sometimes used. This involves redirection of the thought
processes in order to stop the compulsive act.

  Antidepressants can also be used. Some antidepressants which 
             are approved by the FDA for treating this condition include:
 
- Sertraline (Zoloft)
- Fluoxetine (Prozac)
- Paroxetine (Paxil)

It is important to recognize there are side effects to antidepressants.
Gastrointestinal upset and drowsiness may occur.
