ADDRESSING IV THERAPY AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION /REACTION
There are numerous reasons a patient may require
IV therapy.

1) The patient who was involved in a trauma event and unable to
take fluids by mouth.
2) The patient who is having surgical intervention and has been ordered
NPO ( nothing per orally), by the doctor.
3) The patient who is in Hypovolemic shock in the ER and needs IV fluids
or a blood transfusion.
4) The patient who has been vomiting excessively and needs fluids to
combat dehydration.

The nurse should always be aware of the warning signs

These include:
- chills, anxiety,
- flushing, itching ,

- shortness of breath and chest pain.
Nick was taken to surgery emergently. An exploratory
laparotomy and bowel repair was performed. He also
received 2 units of blood. He was later transferred to
the ICU, in stable condition.
