The meningeal coverings of the brain

The brain has three protective coverings. They are:
- the dura mater is the tough outer most layer
- arachnoid mater is the middle layer
- the pia mater adheres to the brain

A subarachnoid hemorrhage occurs between the pia and
the arachnoid mater, in the subarachnoid space.
Signs an symptoms of a subarachnoid hemorrhage are
similar to those of meningitis.They include:
- headache, photophobia
- nuchal rigidity, possible seizures
- nausea vomiting
- Brudzinski's and Kernig's signs
